Adolescent Medicine
Just as children are not just smaller adults, teenagers are not just larger children. One of the great advances of modern pediatrics has been the emergence of the specialty of adolescent medicine. From mysterious illnesses that come and go, to sex and drugs, to truly life-threatening illnesses such as anorexia nervosa, adolescent medicine is a thing all its own. Our primary care clinicians are well versed in adolescent medicine, but the need for specialists still arises.

We are blessed to have a Bayside graduate who acts as our adolescent consultant. Sara Buckelew, MD, began as a medical assistant at Bayside, went on to medical school, returned as a Bayside physician, and then went on to further training, becoming board certified in two specialty fields, preventive medicine and adolescent medicine. She is now Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UCSF, and head of the UCSF eating disorders program.

Even though Sara is not at present on our staff at Bayside, she is a rapid responder to any of our adolescent medicine concerns, and will give expedited care to Bayside patients at her clinics at UCSF in San Francisco and also in Pleasanton.
